To honour Summerhill getting to its 100th year, we have been working very hard to set up a brand new Centenary website – 100yearsofsummerhill.co.uk – a space where we can share and celebrate the legacy of A.S.Neill’s ideas with those around the world who have also been influenced by his work. There are lots of really exciting features on the new site, which have never been possible before. We know that Summerhill has friends all over the globe, from those who found out about Summerhill School as a kid and dreamt of attending (and maybe actually did!), to students who read the books at university, educators who are implementing A.S.Neill’s ideas in the classroom and parents doing the same at home. On the new site, we have created the space for any individual, educational institution or organisation to share their personal story of how they came to know about Summerhill, and the impact it has had on their lives. These friends can also pin themselves on an interactive map, so that we are able to see how far A.S.Neill’s ideas have reached worldwide, and get a grasp of just how big our wider community really is. In addition to this, our school community will be doing an array of exciting and unique projects to celebrate the big birthday, and we are inviting our friends to celebrate with us, by getting involved and creating their own projects too – all of which will be possible to follow on the new website. We believe the Summerhill values foster an environment where so much is possible, and so we want these celebratory projects to depict this diversity and freedom; the project possibilities are endless! There is also an unprecedented insight into what life at Summerhill really looks like, with an extensive gallery and information covering classrooms, community life, games which are regularly played and events that happen each year. Along with this there is a weekly blog you can follow, providing regular snippets into daily life leading up to and during our centenary year. As well as all this, the website will have ongoing information about upcoming celebratory events, plus developments and fundraising for The A.S.Neill Archive and Research Centre; our most exciting centenary project!
